Counting the Omer started as a simple practice of counting a measure (omer) of barley during the 49 days between Passover and Pentecost. Pesach and Shevaot in Hebrew. It took on a more spiritual mystical significance after the destruction of the first Temple.
It involves focusing on the seven attributes of God as recognized on the Tree of Life, and combinations of them each day and by doing so we cultivate a deeper loving relationship with God, ourselves and each other. It is a yearly practice that gives us strength and expands our spiritual focus and is based on Leviticus 23:15-16. Today we start the count!
